RAILROAD FLAT -- (1/4/12) Railroad Flat resident Mark Belden is a person on the go. He is a candidate for California’s 5th Assembly District which encompasses Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Tuolumne and portions of El Dorado and Placer counties. According to Belden, he has personally met 10,000 people in 10 weeks. So far, he says, he has visited every county in the district except for Mono.
Beldon is no stranger to running for public office. In 1992, he ran for District 2 Supervisor for Calaveras County, only to lose to incumbent Tommy Taylor. In 2010, he ran for the office of State Senator in a special election vacated by the death of Senator Dave Cox, only to lose to Ted Gaines.
At one time Belden was a registered Republican, but in an interview with TLSN he said he became disenchanted with the Republican Party over several issues and, consequently, is now registered as having “No Party Preference.” He said he is at odds with the party because he is pro-choice, is in favor of changing capital punishment to life in prison without the possibility of parole and because he believes a path should be created to legalize immigrants who are illegally in the country, while protecting our border.
